Chris Washburn Article

This article is a very powerful story about the life Chris Washburn an ex-NBA player that I met years ago as a kid back in NewYork. There are many reasons why this story is so important to today's athletes. With the media attention that athletes receive today it is easy for a player to get caught up hanging with the wrong crowd. Each student-athlete should understand that things are not going to come easy in life, an individual have to take responsibility for one's actions and everyone has to work at everything they do in life.

In this article, Chris Washburn had everything handed to him because he was a talented athlete. Individuals would take responsibility for things that he did and he never face the consequence. After being drafted he into the NBA and seeing Lenny Bias die from drugs he continued to use drugs and wasted money on unnecessary things which eventual landed him in prison. This was the first time in his life where he was confronted on something and had to take responsibility for his actions. Obviously, his NBA career was over and the impact that it had on his future was tremendous. Chris talks about what he went through and how life has changed for him now at the age of 44.

As a coach and mentor for your boys and girls, we at Drive4Stardum emphasize that basketball is one aspect of a player's life. We stress that academics, character and having a work ethic equals success and all of this is up to ("U") the individual to have the drive to become a star in whatever arena that one chooses. In our program, we talk with our players about perspective ensuring that each individual is making the right choice(s) even when others (parents, coaches and supporters) are not looking. Enjoy the article.
